Welcome to Islanders Op-Timism, where there is always an optimistic outlook for an Islanders franchise that has one of the most loyal fanbases in the NHL. I have held season tickets for the Islanders since the dreadful, Gorton's Fisherman debut, 1995-96 season. During the season we had a FOUR-headed goalie situation where no goalie posted better than a 3.31 GAA, the other Lindros (who was the original injury-prone Lindros), a General Manager, who was also our coach, that will never be named on this blog, several future All-Stars who would be traded away by this general manager, one village idiot (not Kirk Muller), one future Carolina Hurricanes coach (Kirk Muller, may he never beat the Islanders) and one Zigmund Palffy. THAT was a terrible year. The Nassau Coliseum, 17 years younger than today, was emptier than I can ever remember it, but I suppose that's what happens when the hometown team claws its way to a 22-win season. At times it seemed as if this team was never going to get past their own blue line. I know we all have the right to be upset when your team loses, especially when you put a lot of your time and money into them. I understand that we are all allowed to curse our players when things go bad (which I tend to do), but there is plenty of good heading to Long Island (and yes, they will stay). I guess all I am saying is, there is nothing wrong with drinking the Kool-Aid every once in a while, even if the man giving you the glass is Charles Wang. You don't have to drink it, but ironically, those who leave the glass half-full tend to be the one's whining and complaining, which is our right as a fan. I'm going to drink my glass, though, hope for the playoffs, and have fun with a team that hasn't been all that exciting since the Laviolette days. If you think it's bad now, I'll tell you it could be a lot worse. It could be 1995 all over again.
Your glass should look like this. Trust me. If we don't make the playoffs, at least we get to drink.
Let's have some fun with this.
